The recent wave of Black Lives Matter protests has highlighted the problem of anti-blackness and racism in the UK. The global pandemic has made social and economic inequality more obvious than ever, as we face the horrific fact that Black people are significantly more likely to die from Covid-19. Statues of slave traders are being pulled down, demands are being made for schools and universities to teach the history of the British empire, and people are being made aware of their own complicity with white privilege. In 2020, it is not enough to simply not be racist, we have to be actively anti-racist.

This is why Viva la sisterhood are hiking 10 miles to raise funds to donate to charities across the UK doing really important work in Black communities. We'll be giving your donations to charities like The Racial Justice Network, based in Yorkshire, who organise against racial injustice through education, workshops and activism, running campaigns like Stop the Scam— to resist the extension of mobile bio-metrics used in police stop and search connected with Home Office data.

Period Pack & Chat Event

10/11/19

Our second event of the year! The period pack and chat event was aimed to bring as many people together to donate, sort and pack to prepare packages of period supplies to be handed to Birmigham & Solihul Women's Aid, for their women's refuges in the Midlands. They have a capacity of 55 women and we managed to get over 100 packages packed and an abundance of toiletries for the women in refuges who have fled domestic abuse. We are passionate about ending period poverty and was a nice way for the community to get together to combat this issue that women and girls have to face within the world today.

As well as creating period packages, we used the day to also have a spoken word segment and  guest speakers, each speaker came to give a small talk about their story, what they do.. We had Annika Spalding, discuss her experience of surviving domestic abuse and the importance of sisterhood in doing so. Anna Fawcett on behalf of Birmingham & Solihull Women's Aid who explained what they do at BSWA and the affects of misogyny. The speakers offered us a range of topics from mental health, yoni love and sexual healing, building community and setting up your life to help others and how to start your own company that will benefit women too.

It was a nice turn out and we had the amazing artists MADE IN MIM and +ELEMENTS sister collab who built the RED ROOM, it was such an empowering experience and filled with community spirit and sisterhood bonds have grew ever since.
